Smalle Ee – 2 August 2026

7:50 – A crow is screaming loudly, which is quite a contrast to the still water. There are a lot of those water striders sitting on the water, without moving. Everything seems to still be asleep. I brought a small canvas with me and plan to paint a section of the waterfront.

9:14 – I first made a sketch of the scene I want to paint, and start fairly cautiously. And I am also still quite compliant. Compliant, as in following the colors as I see them before me. But slowly this changes, and I begin to see what the painting wants. In terms of color, but also regarding the brushstrokes. And strangely enough, the smaller the canvas, the larger the brush I intuitively seem to need. The smaller paintings, they seems to be more like windows to the moment. It is then more about the overall experience of that place, at that moment. Where you really look out from one side towards the other, just like with a window. In larger works, it is more like a door, where you can step through and enter.

The spot next to the river called, Smalle Ee, where I had set up my painting gear.

A small plein air painting, depicting the shore of a river. It is painted in expressive painterly brush marks.
The painting and the scene at the end of the painting session.
