This might be one of the most beautiful spots along the west coast of Sweden. There was a kind of pristine brightness around there when we visited. The afternoon sun, the crystal clear water, and the light pink and green rocks. I’m very drawn to the rocks. Perhaps it’s because we don’t have them in the Netherlands. But because I’m not used to painting them, they also intimidate me a little when I set up my easel in front of them. Sometimes being intimidated by a subject can work out well for me, though. It also makes me curious what the process will lead me to.
When I had just set up my easel, the sun came more or less from behind me, shining straight on to the rocks. This is not very ideal, since there were hardly any shades, which made it very hard to distinguish the shapes formed by the rocks. However, I was happy to notice that as time progressed, the sunlight changed its angle, slowly revealing more shadows and, therefore, the shapes of the rocks. When you paint outdoors, it is not always very pleasant that the light changes constantly. But here I was very happy with this change.
