For this painting of a young beech tree, I started with a smaller painting that I had created plein air at the start of autumn. It was not per se meant as a study, but it didn’t feel finished either. Even though it had a certain charm to it, I felt that the tree had much more to show and tell.
When painting outdoors, I had spent quite a bit of time in the presence of the tree. And I noticed after a few weeks that my memory of the moment was still very vivid. So, I got curious: what would happen if I gave the young beech tree a larger canvas to grow on?
