Last summer (2025), my wife and I visited Terschelling during our honeymoon. Terschelling is an island that is part of the Wadden Sea in the north of the Netherlands. During those few bright summery days, we would either bike or enjoy the dunes and beaches, basically letting go of time and drifting off. For me it was the first time being on the island, and I was amazed by the variety in landscapes that the island had to offer. Normally, here on land, I go visit the forests, but of course being on the island, the sea had a big pull on me. The flat, distant horizon that blurs into the sky, with the lighter blues just above the water. The rhythmically alternating waves that shape the water seem small in the distance but are growing towards you. As the water is getting closer, there is a temporary foam and bubbles collecting where the water and the sand meet at the shoreline. The wave fronts with these bubbles present the white, and in between there are the blues that reflect from the sky and mix with the somewhat green or turquoise water. Together with the sound of the sea whooshing into your ears, you are taken over by the elements that are so much bigger than you. You are there, and the sea is there. Back in the studio, I honored these memories with this painting.
