This painting is based on a visit we made to Colorado de Rustrel in the summer of 2023, an immersive nature reserve in the south of France. Dense forest passages alternate with rock formations of ochre in shades ranging from bright yellow to deep brownish red. In this painting I explored a spot where more or less bare soil of ochre meets a dense forest in the background. On the day we were there, it was a very bright, sunny morning, and places like these have a very intriguing way in which these let the light disperse through all the elements present.
Back in 2023, I had already created two paintings of this place (you can find them here and here). But now, 2 years later, I’m thinking back to the place I got compelled to revisit and seeing if I could use my memories and experience of the day as a trigger into something new. A place to step into, where light and shadow compel you to follow the path that is suggested. A forest that is there, still to be discovered.
