On a summer evening, I was walking in a forest nearby with a small canvas. I walked by a stretch of beech trees just at the right moment. The sun had dropped to such an angle that the soil and some of the trunks were really lit up by a bright orange sun light. And, in the back, there were these very dark pine trees that created an almost impenetrable backdrop. It was almost like a David Lynch film scene. I knew it was going to last for only a moment, so I set up my easel very quickly and painted a very quick study. The smaller study has stayed on my mind since then. In this painting I revisited that memory.
