This is an oil painting of a flooded forest, painted plein air on sunny days at the beginning of spring. I came across this place a few weeks before, when it had been raining a lot, and the fallen trees standing in the water made a big impression on me.
For this painting I made use of transparent gesso so that the color of the raw linen is still visible. Lately, I have been experimenting with the absorbency of the canvas, and here I worked with a really absorbent surface, which creates a kind of rough look. This way, I could layer paint in a more broken way, allowing for optical mixing of colors and edges. Up close, it looks very abstract, but seen from afar, the whole makes sense.
