A Flemmish jay, painted with oil paint on a wooden panel. This is a bird portrait that has been created with the use of multiple transparent layers to create a sense of realism. Other than the localized bright blue patch on the wings, the palette for this painting is quite muted. There is however a contrast in colors; complementary blue grey of the background, and the soft brown tints of the bird’s feathers. Overall it is loosely painted, yet some details are quite presice, like the eyes, the beak, and some of the feathers of the wing.
I find the Flemmish jay one of the most intruiging birds around here. It is very shy, but very vocal. You can hear it screaming from a distance, but also hear it make subtle sounds that trick you into thinking that it is actually a very different bird.
