This autumn (2025), I received a commission to paint a field bouquet. I don’t usually paint a lot of still lives, but I got triggered to accept the challenge. The basic idea was to paint a little bouquet of wildflowers. Then the request was to paint it on a very particularly sized canvas (210 cm high and 80 cm wide), since it was going to be positioned opposite of a window with exactly that size. Then, as for the colors, I noticed in conversations and images sent by the person I painted it for that there was a preference for warm tones, perhaps leaning toward a more traditional brownish palette.
I liked the idea of collecting wildflowers. I am often roaming around outdoors in nature, but in my plein air paintings I am more often focusing on atmospheres and light interactions rather than zooming in on details. So, I was interested to see how this would shift my attention. And luckily, considering it was already halfway through October, I was still able to collect a few flowers: evening primroses, chamomile, cornflowers, buttercups, red clover, and a few others. It gave me a predominantly yellow bouquet, but with a touch of blue and white.
