This is an oil painting of two coots on the water surface. The work is painted in bold unusual red and green water, whereas the birds are painted in blue. The forms are simplified in a painterly manner with visible brush strokes to cause a little bit of friction between the reality of these birds, and the sensation of the paint.
Coots are a familiar sight here in the Netherlands, with their brightly colored beaks and shields on their heads. Here I did not try to paint the details of the birds, but tried to capture their bold personality by using bold colors and keeping the brushstrokes direct and alive.
I have painted coots before. You can find these works here and here.
