Beetsterzwaag – 23 July 2026

I have just set up my easel to continue working on my painting of blackberry bushes. This is probably one of the last times, but maybe not. In the painting, I want to show how the bush proliferates and how you get lost among the leaves. And while painting, I certainly got lost. It is a tangle, and by now, the painting is a bit of a tangle too.

I hear some cars in the distance on the highway a little way off. Nearby, two great spotted woodpeckers are communicating loudly with each other. As I write this, a little butterfly, a rosy footman, lands on my shoe. I make a quick video and a photo of the little creature, and now I get to work!

I am a few hours in now, and it feels like the painting is finished. At a certain point, I no longer follow what I see in front of me in the forest, but I am busy looking at what the painting needs. In this case, the group of leaves is very busy and complex. A kind of rhythm. Whether everything is exactly right or not, I would like to see the rhythm reflected. It happens quite intuitively, but with different variations of green and blue, I have tried to add a sort of colored spots to find exactly the right balance, or rather, the right imbalance.
